LA1: Understanding The Purpose of Diegetic and Non-Diegetic Sound

Image
Diegetic Sound Diegetic sound is a noise which has a source on-screen. They are noises which are heard by both the character and the audience and sometimes could be edited in, e.g. like a phone call. Diegetic sound can be dialogue between characters or footsteps. Diegetic sound exists inside of the story and is heard by the characters. Taken from - Stephanie B.  What is the difference between ‘Diegetic’ and ‘Non-diegetic’ sound?.  Available: https://www.mytutor.co.uk/answers/1621/GCSE/Media-Studies/What-is-the-difference-between-Diegetic-and-Non-diegetic-sound/ . Last accessed 28th Feb 2020. An example of diegetic sound in film - I think this clip shows good use of diegetic sound in film since from the beginning to around two minutes in, the scene shows the main characters just talking to each other. The scene also starts with the sound of a radio, which you may firstly think is a non diegetic sound, yet it goes on to show the house and more importantly the main char...

LA1: Tripods

Image
Tripods Tripods can be essential when taking photos or filming, for different reasons. The main purpose for a tripod is to make sure your camera is steady, therefore your footage turns out smooth. Tripods have several different components and depending on the tripod each one can come in a different size. The release plate at the top of the tripod functions so that the screw can screw into the camera being used, then the plate is locked back into the head. The ball head consists of an enclosed ball with a tightening knob, which when looses the ball can be repositioned. When the camera is in its correct position, the knob is tightened so the ball and camera remain still. Both the centre column twist lock and multi angle leg lock are used to lock that specific component in place, so that the tripod is stable. The centre column can be extended to change the height of the tripod, if not locked/mounted.  A lot of centre columns have a friction collar that keeps them in plac...

LA1: Three point lighting tutorial

Image
The three point lighting system uses three different point sources - key light, fill light and edge light - for specific purposes. Key Light The key light is your main light source and is the strongest and brightest. It is the one that illuminates the subject. If you only have one light source lighting up your subject, that makes it your key light. When shooting an object or person, we almost always want the front to be illuminated and clear - this is why majority of  the time the main light source is located in front of your subject. With more knowledge you could use  the key light from any direction you like, not just from the front. Fill Light Already in its name, the fill light fill's the space that isn't full. Fill light is used when e.g. a photo is taken with light used so there will be a shadow that you may not want. The fill light would shine where the shadow is and replace it with light rather than shade. It is basically used to fill in the shadow...
